The Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja’s iconic sports facility, has become the centre of a heated dispute between two key Nigerian institutions: the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) and the National Sports Commission (NSC). According to multiple reports, the two bodies are at odds over the ownership of a 200-bed hostel situated within the stadium’s premises.
The conflicting claims were first reported by Blueprint Newspapers on September 22nd, and have since been echoed by other media outlets such as The Guardian Nigeria and Daily Trust.
While the NSC maintains that the hostel was built with funds specifically allocated for sports infrastructure development, the NIS insists that it has a legitimate claim to the facility due to its proximity to the stadium’s immigration checkpoints.
The Nigerian government has yet to issue a statement clarifying the ownership of the hostel or mediating the dispute between the two agencies.
