Osun State Advances State Police Proposal with Constitutional Amendment Approval

In a move that could reshape Nigeria’s law enforcement landscape, the Osun State House of Assembly has unanimously approved a proposed constitutional amendment for the establishment of state police. This decision, reported by Punch Newspapers, Tribune Online, and Daily Post Nigeria on September 22, 2026, marks a significant step towards potentially implementing state-level policing in the country.

The development follows the National Assembly’s request for states to support constitutional amendments aimed at enabling state police creation. The Osun State House of Assembly has now added its voice to this call, but it remains uncertain when such a change might be implemented.

The proposal was debated during Tuesday’s plenary, with Speaker Adewale Egbedun confirming the House’s support for the constitutional amendment. The approval could pave the way for state police establishment, which has been a contentious issue in Nigeria due to concerns about federalism and national security.

This decision comes amidst ongoing discussions surrounding the need for better policing at the state level, particularly given the challenges faced by the existing centralized system. However, it is essential to note that the constitutional amendment process may still face hurdles before becoming law. It requires ratification by two-thirds of all state houses of assembly and approval by the president.
