Former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, has expressed concerns about the growing influence of election tribunals in determining electoral outcomes in Nigeria. According to reports by Sahara Reporters and Vanguard News, Osigwe made these remarks during a presentation titled ‘Election Petitions: Courts must not replace voters’ at an editors conference in Enugu. The ex-NBA president argued that the judiciary should not gradually replace Nigerian voters in deciding who represents the people.
This development comes amid concerns about the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process, with some claiming that politicians now rely more on election tribunals to win elections rather than relying on the voters’ mandate. This shift has raised questions about democracy and governance in Nigeria.
Osigwe’s comments are timely given the upcoming general elections scheduled for 2027, which will determine the leadership of the country for the next four years.
