Survivors Speak Out: The Tragic Deaths of 37 Mining Suspects in Minna’s Cell of Death

In a chilling account that has sent shockwaves through Niger State, survivors of a detention centre run by the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have spoken out about the tragic deaths of 37 mining suspects. According to reports by Premium Times Nigeria, the incident occurred in Minna, the state capital, where the suspects were being held without charge for over a week.

The survivors painted a harrowing picture of overcrowded cells with no ventilation or access to food or water. One survivor, Mr Isah, carried bite marks on his arm left by a gasping cell mate in the last minutes of his life. Another survivor described seeing bodies piled up as new ones were added, with no attempt made by the authorities to remove them.

The Niger State Police Command has since ordered an investigation into the matter, but the NSCDC has not yet commented on the allegations. The incident has raised concerns about the treatment of suspects in custody and the need for improved conditions in detention centres across Nigeria.

This tragic story serves as a stark reminder of the importance of upholding human rights, even for those who are accused of crimes. It is essential that Nigerian authorities take swift action to address these allegations and ensure such tragedies do not happen again.
