The National Inland Waterways House of Assembly (NIHSA) has raised an alarm over the imminent flood risk in 17 states across Nigeria. According to a report by The Sun Nigeria, the affected states include Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Benue, Delta, Ebonyi, Enugu, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Sokoto, Taraba, and Yobe. The NIHSA has called on the relevant authorities to take urgent action to mitigate the risk of flooding in these states.
The flood alert comes as the country is currently experiencing heavy rainfall, which has led to flooding in several parts of the country. In July, over 100 people were reported dead and many more displaced due to floods in various parts of Nigeria. The NIHSA’s warning highlights the need for continued vigilance and preparations to tackle the flood situation.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has urged Nigerians living in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer grounds as a preventive measure. NEMA has also called on state governments to take proactive measures to prevent loss of lives and property due to flooding.
