INEC: Parties Defying Membership Register Rule Risk Disqualification – Supreme Court Ruling

In a move that could shake up the Nigerian political landscape, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a stern warning to political parties. According to a report by Premium Times Nigeria, parties that flout the membership register rule risk disqualification, following a recent Supreme Court ruling.

The ruling, which affirmed the constitutionality of Sections 77(5), 77(6) and 77(7) of the Electoral Act 2026, is expected to bring much-needed transparency to the electoral process.

This development comes at a time when Nigeria is preparing for crucial elections in 2027. With the ruling, parties are now expected to adhere strictly to the membership register rule to avoid disqualification.

The Supreme Court’s decision is a significant step towards ensuring that only eligible and legitimate candidates are fielded in future elections. This move is expected to boost public confidence in the electoral process and promote a fair and credible voting system.
