Fuel Price Surge: FG Takes Action to Shield Nigerians from Further Increase, Rejects Subsidy Restoration

The Federal Government has taken a decisive step to safeguard Nigerians from the impact of the recent fuel price surge. In a statement issued by the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, the government has reiterated its stance against a return to fuel subsidies. According to Ahmed, the subsidy regime had been fraught with corruption and mismanagement, leading to the diversion of funds meant for public good.

‘We cannot continue to bear the brunt of the subsidy costs while our citizens suffer from the lack of basic infrastructure and services,’ Ahmed was quoted as saying by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The minister’s statement comes in the wake of calls for the reintroduction of fuel subsidies by some sections of the public, who argue that the recent price increase is unjustifiable.

However, Ahmed maintains that the government is committed to finding sustainable solutions to address the challenges facing the petroleum sector. She emphasized the need for increased local refining capacity, improved infrastructure, and enhanced regulation to ensure fair pricing and prevent further price volatility.

‘We are working tirelessly to address the challenges in the petroleum sector and ensure that Nigerians have access to affordable and reliable fuel supply,’ Ahmed said.

The fuel price surge, which has seen the pump price of petrol rise by over 60 percent in the past few months, has been a source of concern for many Nigerians, who are already grappling with the effects of the ongoing economic recession.

As the government continues to implement measures to address the challenges, Nigerians are hoping for a swift resolution to the fuel crisis and a return to affordable fuel prices.
