Calls for Abolition of Death Penalty Gain Momentum in Nigeria

In a push towards human rights advancement, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and foreign embassies are calling for the abolition of the death penalty in Nigeria. This move comes as the West African nation has not executed anyone in ten consecutive years, a development that meets the international standard for a de facto moratorium. However, over 3,000 individuals remain on prolonged death row detention.

According to Premium Times Nigeria, the NHRC has been advocating for an official moratorium on the death penalty, citing human rights violations and the inefficiencies of the criminal justice system in Nigeria. The commission’s stance is supported by several foreign embassies, who have joined the call for the government to reconsider its position on capital punishment.

In a statement to Tribune Online, the NHRC’s chairman, Tony Ojukwu, emphasized the need for the government to take a decisive step towards ending the use of the death penalty in Nigeria. Ojukwu highlighted the instances of judicial errors, police brutality, and systemic injustices that plague the country’s criminal justice system, stating that the death penalty only exacerbates these issues.

The call for the abolition of the death penalty in Nigeria is gaining traction, as many believe that it is an outdated and inhumane form of punishment that has no place in a modern and progressive society. As the nation grapples with issues of crime and justice, this push towards the abolition of the death penalty represents a significant step towards a more equitable and just criminal justice system in Nigeria.
