EFCC Arraigns Nigerian-American Over Alleged $320,000 Vehicle Import Fraud

According to a report from Businessday Nigeria, the EFCC has arraigned a Nigerian-American citizen, identified as Chukwuemeka Okoye, over an alleged $320,000 vehicle import fraud. The case was brought before the Federal High Court in Lagos. According to the EFCC, between 2020 and 2022, Okoye imported vehicles valued at over N130 million (about $320,000) into Nigeria, but under-declared their values, thereby evading tax and customs duties. The EFCC alleges that the imported vehicles were also not up to the quantities declared by Okoye. If found guilty, Okoye faces a possible prison sentence and hefty fines. This case highlights the persistent issue of customs fraud in Nigeria, which costs the government billions of naira annually.
