Nigeria at 66: Akukwe Lament Over State of Railways

As Nigeria marks its 66th independence anniversary, the President of the General Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations in Nigeria (GFFMA), Okey Akukwe, has expressed his concerns about the state of the country’s railway system. According to a report by The Sun Nigeria, Akukwe stated that he weeps whenever he remembers the state of the Nigerian railways. The GFFMA president lamented that the railways have been neglected for too long and that the country is losing out on the numerous benefits that a functional railway system could bring. Akukwe called on the federal government to prioritize the rehabilitation and expansion of the railways, stating that it is a critical infrastructure that can boost the country’s economic growth and development. The railways in Nigeria have been plagued with numerous challenges, including lack of funding, inadequate maintenance, and poor infrastructure. These challenges have led to a decline in the efficiency and reliability of the railways, making it difficult for goods and passengers to move around the country efficiently. Akukwe’s concerns highlight the need for the federal government to take decisive action to address the challenges facing the Nigerian railways. The railways are a critical component of the country’s transport infrastructure, and their rehabilitation and expansion are essential for the country’s economic growth and development. According to Akukwe, the government must prioritize the railways and invest heavily in their rehabilitation and expansion to ensure that the country’s railways are functional and efficient.
