The governorship race for Cross River state in 2027 is shaping up, but not without controversy. As per the final list published by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), only eight political parties have candidates vying for the top position. Conspicuously absent from this list are the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria, the eight political parties with candidates are the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the Labour Party (LP), the Young Progressives Party (YPP), the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), and the African Action Congress (AAC).
However, the NDC has vowed to take legal action over the omission of its candidates. In a statement made by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Henry Umoru, the NDC expressed its intention to use ‘every available legal means’ to ensure the restoration of its candidates’ names on the INEC list. The ADC has yet to make a similar statement.
This development could have significant implications for the 2027 Cross River gubernatorial race, as the ADC and NDC are not insignificant players in Nigerian politics. It remains to be seen how this situation will unfold in the coming months.
