Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has urged Germany to invest in Abuja’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Agriculture programmes. Speaking during a meeting with the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Christoph Sorensen, in Abuja on Wednesday, Wike highlighted the potential of these sectors for mutual growth and development. According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Wike emphasized the need for Germany to invest in Abuja’s ICT infrastructure, particularly in areas such as digital innovation, cybersecurity, and digital economy. He also invited German companies to invest in Abuja’s agriculture sector, especially in the areas of irrigation, mechanised farming, and agro-processing. The governor’s call for German investment comes amidst efforts by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Qatar to explore urban development and investment partnership. It is not clear whether the potential German investment is linked to this partnership, but the governor’s invitation to German companies to invest in Abuja’s agriculture sector suggests a broader effort to attract foreign investment to the city. The German ambassador, Christoph Sorensen, expressed his country’s readiness to work with Nigeria to promote investment and cooperation in various sectors, including ICT and agriculture. This is not the first time that Wike has called for foreign investment in Abuja’s ICT sector. In August, he invited South Korean companies to invest in Abuja’s digital economy, particularly in the areas of digital infrastructure, cloud computing, and e-government services. The governor’s efforts to attract foreign investment to Abuja’s ICT and agriculture sectors are in line with his administration’s vision for a modern, prosperous, and sustainable capital city.
