In a move to dispel rumours and speculations, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has unequivocally stated that algorithms will not decide the 2027 elections in Nigeria. Speaking to various news outlets, Amupitan stressed that the choice of who governs the country will rest with the citizens and not with Artificial Intelligence (AI).
According to Punch Newspapers, Amupitan reiterated that the 2027 elections will follow the same traditional procedures as previous elections, with voter accreditation and result collation being carried out by humans.
‘The outcome of the 2027 elections will be determined by Nigerians, not algorithms,’ Amupitan was quoted as saying.
Vanguard News also reported that the INEC Chairman assured Nigerians that the 2027 general elections will not be fully automated, insisting that citizens, not AI, will determine the outcome.
These assurances come amidst concerns that the increasing reliance on technology in election processes could potentially sway voters or lead to manipulation. However, Amupitan has sought to alleviate these fears by emphasizing the importance of human intervention in the electoral process.
This development is significant as it reassures Nigerians that the democratic process remains in their hands, and any decisions made during the elections will be transparent and free from technological manipulation.
