Lagos Traffic Diversion Announced for Independence Bridge Repairs

The Lagos State Government has announced a traffic diversion on the Independence Bridge, a key route connecting Lagos Island and the Mainland, due to urgent asphalt repairs scheduled from October 16-18, 2026. According to Nigeria Info FM, the diversion is aimed at ensuring the safety of motorists and minimizing disruptions during the repairs.

The Punch Newspapers reported that the traffic diversion will be in effect for the entire weekend, affecting thousands of commuters who rely on the bridge daily. The Federal Ministry of Works (FMW) will be executing the repairs.

This development is expected to cause significant congestion on alternate routes, and motorists are advised to plan their travel accordingly. The Lagos State Government urges motorists to cooperate with the traffic management officials during this period.

This isn’t the first time the Independence Bridge has been the focus of traffic management measures in Lagos. In 2022, the bridge was fully closed for three weeks for repairs, causing major traffic gridlocks across the city.

The traffic diversion is a reminder of the constant need for infrastructure maintenance in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub. As the city’s population continues to grow, the demand on its infrastructure increases, highlighting the need for regular maintenance and repairs to ensure smooth commuting and business operations.
