Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has raised eyebrows over the Federal Government’s decision to delay the release of funds accruable to states from the Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) proceeds until after the 2027 general elections. According to a report by Tribune Online, the governor questioned whether the elections are more important than the development and welfare of Nigerians. In a statement, Makinde expressed concern that state governments, which he said are in dire need of the funds to tackle critical infrastructural and developmental challenges, might be left in the lurch due to the alleged delay. The governor’s concern stems from a report that the Federal Government intends to hold on to the NLNG funds until after the 2027 general elections, presumably to fund election-related activities. Although the Federal Government has not commented on the allegation, the report has sparked a heated debate among Nigerians, with many expressing concern that the government may be prioritizing elections over the welfare of the citizens. This move, critics argue, could worsen the already precarious economic situation in the country, particularly in states that are heavily reliant on these funds for development. The NLNG, a leading supplier of liquefied natural gas, is a major contributor to the Nigerian government’s revenue. It is unclear whether the alleged delay in the release of funds is linked to the ongoing economic downturn in the country, but the government’s decision, if true, could have far-reaching implications for the Nigerian economy and the welfare of its citizens.
