In a statement released on Tuesday, the Institute for Dietetics in Nigeria (IDN) expressed concerns over a proposed bill that seeks to establish a Nutritionists Registration Council. The proposed council, according to the IDN, may lead to an increase in quackery in the nutrition and dietetics field.
The IDN argued that the proposed legislation did not adequately ensure that only qualified and certified professionals were permitted to practise in the field. The institute urged the National Assembly to withdraw the bill and reconsider its approach to regulation in the sector.
According to Premium Times Nigeria, the proposed bill has been criticized by various stakeholders, who argue that it may create unnecessary bureaucracy and hinder the development of the nutrition and dietetics profession in Nigeria.
The proposed Nutritionists Registration Council bill is currently before the National Assembly. It remains to be seen whether the IDN’s call for its withdrawal will be heeded.
