The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has made significant progress in dewatering operations at the site of the crashed ATR 42-500 aircraft, NAF 931, in Igbokoda, Ondo State, according to reports from Premium Times Nigeria and Vanguard News. The news outlets reported that continuous pumping has substantially reduced the water level at the crash site, with personnel working to remove most of the remaining water, subject to prevailing conditions. The NAF spokesperson, Ehimen Ejodame, issued a statement confirming the progress, saying that the ongoing efforts are part of the 14-day recovery process that started on October 5, following the plane crash that killed seven people. The crash site is located in a swampy area, making the recovery process challenging. The NAF has not said when the facility began operating, but it is expected to aid in the recovery of the remaining debris and bodies. The crash of the Nigerian Air Force plane, a domestic passenger aircraft, is being investigated by the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) to determine the cause. According to the AIB, the preliminary investigation revealed that the plane had a technical fault before it crashed. The crash has sparked outrage and calls for improved safety measures in the aviation sector in Nigeria. The NAF has promised to cooperate fully with the AIB during the investigation.
