In a move aimed at addressing the persistent poor quality of network services across the country, the House of Representatives has summoned MTN Nigeria, Airtel, Globacom, Mafab Communications, and other telecommunications operators. The ultimatum was issued on Wednesday by the House Ad Hoc Committee on Telecommunications, which warned that the chief executives of these companies could face arrest summons if they fail to appear. According to Punch Newspapers, the poor network services have been a source of frustration for many Nigerians, with complaints about dropped calls, slow internet speeds, and poor coverage. This is not the first time the telecommunications sector has faced scrutiny from the National Assembly. In 2021, the Senate had also summoned the chief executives of the same telcos over similar complaints. The House Ad Hoc Committee on Telecommunications is expected to hold a public hearing on the matter on November 4th, 2026. This development comes at a time when the telecommunications sector is facing increased competition, with new entrants such as 9mobile and Smile Communications offering cheaper rates and better services. It is unclear whether the summons will lead to any significant improvements in network quality, but Nigerians are hopeful that the House of Representatives’ intervention will help to address the longstanding issue.
