Finance Minister Oyedele: Nigerian Businesses Require More Than Loans for Growth

Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele has emphasized that Nigerian businesses need more than loans to facilitate growth. According to a report by Punch Newspapers, Oyedele underscored the need for patient capital and institutional support to help businesses thrive beyond loan disbursements.

Oyedele’s statement comes amidst concerns over the difficulties faced by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in accessing financing in Nigeria.

For many entrepreneurs, obtaining loans is a significant hurdle, as banks often require collateral and strict repayment terms. However, according to Oyedele, this is not the only challenge that businesses in Nigeria face.

In his remarks, Oyedele highlighted the importance of patient capital, which is capital provided over a longer period with a focus on long-term growth. He also emphasized the need for institutional support, including mentorship, training, and networking opportunities, to help businesses succeed.

The Finance Minister’s comments are a call for a shift in the focus of financial institutions and policymakers from solely providing loans to supporting businesses holistically. By addressing the complex challenges faced by Nigerian businesses, the government aims to foster a more conducive environment for entrepreneurship and economic growth.

The issue of financing for Nigerian businesses has been a topic of discussion for some time now. In 2025, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) introduced the N220 billion Youth Investment Fund to support young entrepreneurs. However, concerns have been raised about the effectiveness of the fund in addressing the financing needs of SMEs.

As Nigeria strives to diversify its economy and reduce its dependence on oil, the success of its businesses is crucial. By ensuring that businesses have the necessary support, the government aims to promote job creation, innovation, and economic growth.
