In a recent statement, a two-time National Assembly member, Sam Onuigbo, emphasized the need for increased focus on renewable energy sources to tackle Nigeria’s energy accessibility challenges. According to Onuigbo, while the country has made significant strides in energy transition, more targeted efforts are necessary to achieve sustainable progress. Specifically, he highlighted solar power, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and electric vehicles as potential solutions. Daily Post Nigeria reported that Onuigbo’s comments came at a time when Nigeria grapples with poor power supply, which has hindered economic growth and daily life for many Nigerians. The former lawmaker urged governors to prioritize renewable energy projects, stating that these initiatives could lead to energy independence and reduced reliance on fossil fuels. This shift, Onuigbo argued, could have far-reaching benefits for Nigeria’s environment and economy. Despite the potential benefits, it remains unclear how the government plans to address the challenges associated with implementing renewable energy projects at a national scale. The Nigerian government has not yet released a comprehensive plan outlining its strategy for transitioning to renewable energy sources.
