In a historic first, Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane has been crowned the winner of the 2026 Ballon d’Or, but not without stirring controversy. According to multiple Nigerian news outlets, Kane’s win has sparked discussions about the award’s integrity. While Radio Nigeria Lagos reported that Kane ended England’s 25-year wait for the prestigious award, Daily Post Nigeria highlighted concerns raised by former Real Madrid midfielder Guti, who questioned why the ceremony was moved to London and claimed the results were "written from the very beginning." The Grammy-award-winning singer Burna Boy, who presented the Sócrates Award to Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka, made history at the awards ceremony, but his accomplishment was overshadowed by Kane’s victory and the ensuing controversy. Kane’s win comes as Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé faces controversy in China over a video on The Bridge, where he joked about an edited image portraying him as Mao Zedong. Spanish media reported that Chinese state broadcaster CCTV has suspended its coverage of all LaLiga matches due to the controversy. The 2026 Ballon d’Or, which honors the world’s best footballer, was held in Paris, France on October 27, 2026. The award, organized by France Football magazine, was first given in 1956 and is considered one of the most prestigious individual honors in the sport.
