According to a report by Premium Times Nigeria, George Agwe, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has stated that there is still a possibility for opposition parties to unite behind a single candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections. Agwe made this statement during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on Tuesday, 30th September, 2026. He said, I see the 2027 general election not as a sprint. I see it as a marathon race. We still have October; we still have November. They can still come together if indeed they are sincere about rescuing Nigeria.
Agwe further explained that the opposition parties need to show unity and work towards a common goal if they want to dislodge the ruling party from power in 2027. The APC chieftain, however, did not specify which opposition party or candidate he was referring to.
The 2027 general elections are still over two years away, and it remains unclear whether the opposition parties will be able to put aside their differences and present a united front against the ruling APC. The last presidential election in 2023 saw several opposition parties fielding separate candidates, which many believe helped the incumbent president, Muhammadu Buhari, win re-election.
