Dangote, Ruto Launch Controversial $16 Billion Kenya Refinery

In a high-profile event attended by five African heads of state, Nigerian business magnate Aliko Dangote and Kenyan President William Ruto officially launched a controversial $16 billion oil refinery in Lamu, Kenya. However, the ceremony took place amidst ongoing land acquisition disputes and legal challenges over compensation, environmental concerns, and other issues (Premium Times Nigeria).

The project, which is being built by Dangote Industries Limited, aims to reduce Kenya’s reliance on imported petroleum products and boost the East African country’s economy. However, local residents have protested against the project, citing fears of displacement and environmental damage (THISDAYLIVE).

The controversy surrounding the refinery is not new. In 2025, protests erupted over the initial acquisition of land for the project, leading to clashes between security forces and residents. Despite these challenges, the Kenyan government has maintained its support for the project (Premium Times Nigeria).

Aliko Dangote’s Dangote Industries Limited is a major player in Africa’s industrial sector, with interests in cement, fertilizers, and other industries across the continent. The company’s foray into Kenya marks a significant expansion of its operations (THISDAYLIVE).
