Senate Clears NGE President and 15 Others for NHRC Governing Board

The Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters has cleared the President of the Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE), Mustapha Isah, and 15 other nominees for appointment to the governing board of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The move follows a confirmation hearing held by the committee on Wednesday, October 27, 2026. According to Premium Times Nigeria, the lawmakers urged the nominees to demonstrate integrity, patriotism, and a strong commitment to the national interest as they discharge their responsibilities. It is worth noting that the nominees include the Editor of Vanguard Newspapers, Eze Anaba, who was also cleared. This development is significant as it marks a step forward in the process of constituting the NHRC board. The NHRC, established in 1995, is an independent, quasi-judicial body responsible for the promotion and protection of human rights in Nigeria. Its governing board plays a crucial role in overseeing its operations and ensuring adherence to its mandate.
