Nigeria Aims for Defense Equipment Self-Sufficiency 61 Years After DICON
Nigeria's defense sector is taking a significant step towards self-sufficiency in military equipment production, following plans announced by DICON-D7G to expand indigenous manufacturing, attract foreign investment, and create thousands of jobs.

Six decades after its establishment, the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) is renewing its push for self-sufficiency in military equipment production. According to a report by Vanguard News, DICON-D7G unveiled its plans to expand indigenous defense manufacturing, attract foreign investment, and create 7,000 jobs for retired military personnel and civilians. The initiative, being promoted at the ongoing Africa International Aerospace and Defence Exhibition (AIAD), aims to position Nigeria as a hub for defense equipment manufacturing in Africa.
Vanguard News further reports that DICON-D7G is seeking technology transfer and partnerships with foreign defense manufacturers to drive this ambition. The push for self-sufficiency is part of the Nigerian government’s broader strategy to reduce dependence on imported military equipment and bolster the country’s security infrastructure.
The potential for this initiative is significant. A self-sufficient defense industry could create thousands of jobs, particularly for retired military personnel and skilled technicians. Moreover, it could help Nigeria assert its regional influence and strengthen its national security. However, the success of the initiative depends heavily on the ability to secure foreign investment and technology transfer.
