Clarifying the Confusion: Afenifere Remains Unified Despite Allegations of Split
Amidst rumours of a split, the General Secretary of Afenifere, Chief Ademola Folarin, clarifies the organisation's stance.

In a recent interview, Chief Ademola Folarin, the General Secretary of the prominent Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has clarified that the group remains unified, despite allegations of a potential split. Folarin, also known as the Agbaakin Maiyegun of Ibadanland, spoke about the ongoing rumours during a wide-ranging interview.
One of the topics that drew attention was the endorsement of Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential race by the organisation’s leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti. According to Folarin, Fasoranti did not consult the organisation before endorsing Obi, leading to some confusion within the ranks. However, Folarin emphasized that this does not signal a split within Afenifere.
Another point of contention was the endorsement of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu for the presidency by Fasoranti, despite his own leadership being supplanted by Tinubu within the organisation. Folarin clarified that Fasoranti’s endorsement does not reflect a shift in Afenifere’s allegiance, but rather a personal decision by Fasoranti.
It is essential for Nigerian readers to understand the role and position of Afenifere within Yoruba politics, as the organisation plays a significant role in shaping the political landscape of the Southwest region. The clarification by Chief Folarin provides much-needed clarity amidst the rumours of a split within Afenifere.
