In a dramatic turn of events, a witness in the ongoing corruption trial of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has accused him of offering a bribe of $600,000 to stifle an investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), according to reports by Premium Times and Tribune Online. The allegations form part of the prosecution’s evidence against the former governor and have yet to be established by the court. The witness claimed that $500,000 and another $100,000 were set aside to bribe EFCC officials and an intermediary to stop investigations into some companies. The case, presided over by Justice Darius Khobo of the Kaduna State High Court, is ongoing and the court has not yet ruled on these allegations. The trial, which began in 2021, revolves around several allegations of financial misconduct during El-Rufai’s tenure as governor. The development adds a new layer of intrigue to the trial, which has already seen numerous witnesses testify against the former governor. The allegations, if proven, could have significant implications for El-Rufai’s political career and reputation.
