A coalition of human rights organisations, comprising the South-East Human Rights Bureau (SEHRB), Oganihu Igbo Development Foundation and the International Society for Civil Liberties & Rule of Law (Intersociety), has called for an independent investigation into alleged killings, torture, enforced disappearances, secret burials and deaths in custody linked to security operations in South-East Nigeria. According to Vanguard News, the call comes in the wake of mounting reports of human rights abuses by security forces in the region. The allegations include extrajudicial killings, torture, and forced disappearances, with victims reportedly buried secretly or in mass graves. The organisations have demanded a thorough, impartial probe into these allegations to ensure accountability and prevent further abuses. The South-East, home to several Igbo ethnic groups, has been a hotbed of unrest in recent years, with various separatist movements calling for the creation of an independent state, Biafra. The Nigerian government has responded with a strong security presence, leading to concerns about human rights violations. This latest call for investigation underscores the need for transparency and adherence to the rule of law in the region, ensuring the protection of all citizens’ rights.
