The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has called on state governments to scrap the right-of-way fees on telecommunications infrastructure. According to the association, these charges account for up to 60% of fibre-optic deployment costs in some states, hindering the expansion of telecom coverage across Nigeria. The call was made in a statement signed by Gbenga Adebayo, ALTON’s chairman. The association noted that the high cost of deploying telecom infrastructure in Nigeria is a major impediment to the growth of the sector, and the scrapping of right-of-way fees would significantly reduce these costs. This move, ALTON believes, would lead to increased investment in telecom infrastructure, improved internet connectivity, and enhanced digital services for Nigerians. The association’s plea comes amidst ongoing efforts by the federal government to improve Nigeria’s telecom infrastructure. However, state governments have been known to charge exorbitant right-of-way fees, making it difficult for telecom operators to expand their network coverage. The scrapping of these fees, ALTON argues, would foster a conducive environment for the growth of the telecom sector and promote digital inclusion in Nigeria. This development is significant for Nigerians as it could lead to improved internet connectivity, increased access to digital services, and enhanced economic growth.
