Following the resurgence of an Amnesty International (AI) report detailing deaths of detainees at Giwa Barracks, Maiduguri in 2016, the Nigerian Army has stepped forward to clarify the matter. According to Punch Newspapers, the army’s spokesman, Brigadier-General Onyema Nwachukwu, stated that the report was not recent and had been circulating on social media once again.
Nwachukwu explained that the AI had published a similar report in 2016 regarding allegations of human rights violations by military personnel. He added that the army had responded to these claims at the time, conducting investigations and disciplinary actions where necessary.
The clarification comes as the Nigerian public continues to grapple with issues surrounding human rights abuses in the ongoing fight against insurgency in the Northeast. It is crucial for authorities to address such allegations transparently to foster trust and ensure accountability.
