According to a report by the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC), the Nigerian democracy faces a critical test as economic hardship and middle-class apathy threaten its stability. The report, released on October 21, 2026, was highlighted in an article by THISDAYLIVE. The report’s key findings suggest that the rising cost of living has led to frustration among Nigerians, which, if not addressed, could result in decreased electoral participation.
In an effort to counter this, the report urges Nigerians to channel their frustration into active participation in the electoral process. This call was echoed by the Executive Director of PLAC, Clement Nwankwo, and the Centre’s Chairman, Bismarck Rewane, who emphasized the importance of informed and active citizens in maintaining a strong democracy.
This development comes at a time when Nigeria’s economy is facing significant challenges, with inflation reaching a record high and the naira experiencing depreciation. The report warns that these economic woes could have profound effects on the country’s political landscape if not addressed promptly.
