In the wake of a recent fire incident on the Otedola Bridge in Lagos, the Federal Government is considering reintroducing weighbridges on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to prevent overloading by trucks and other articulated vehicles, and reduce road accidents, reports Punch Newspapers and Daily Post Nigeria. The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Olufemi Dare, disclosed this on Tuesday during a joint press briefing with the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, at Otedola Bridge, where a tanker fire occurred a day earlier. According to Dare, the weighbridges, if introduced, will not only check overloading but also help in the enforcement of weight regulations. This move follows a series of accidents on the expressway, attributed to overloading by trucks and other vehicles, which have led to traffic gridlocks and loss of lives. The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is a vital artery connecting Nigeria’s commercial hub, Lagos, with the country’s former capital, Ibadan. The reintroduction of weighbridges on the expressway is expected to improve safety and efficiency on the busy route. However, the Nigerian Government has not yet confirmed when the weighbridges will be installed. According to the Daily Post, the Federal Government is currently engaging stakeholders on the matter.
