In a move aimed at boosting the nation’s oil output, the Federal Government has taken possession of 50 oil fields from awardees who had defaulted on their obligations, according to THISDAYLIVE. This decision follows the government’s insistence on its ‘drill-or-drop’ policy, which stipulates that oil blocks must be drilled or relinquished after a specified period.
The government’s action is part of efforts to increase crude oil production to 500,000 barrels per day and domestic gas output to 1 billion cubic feet per day. The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, also reassured potential investors that Nigeria remains a lucrative investment opportunity, with an estimated $100 billion worth of investments available locally.
This development comes as the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) governors convene to discuss strategies for maintaining oil market stability and ensuring that Nigeria receives its required OPEC quota. The government’s assertive stance on its ‘drill-or-drop’ policy is likely to attract more investments and stimulate oil production in the country.
