In a bid to strengthen food security and address malnutrition among vulnerable groups, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has advocated for the establishment of community food banks nationwide. During a visit to Katsina State, she urged state governors to establish functional food banks in each of their three senatorial districts. According to the Voice of Nigeria, the First Lady made the call while formally handing over food items to the beneficiaries. This move is an extension of her Rape in Hiding (RHI) initiative, which aims to empower women and provide them with essential resources. The call comes at a time when Nigeria faces food insecurity, with millions of people struggling to afford nutritious meals. The First Lady’s initiative is a step towards addressing this issue on a community level. However, it remains to be seen how many states will heed the call and establish community food banks. According to Vanguard News, the First Lady’s initiative is aimed at providing food for those in need and improving the nutrition of vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children under five.
