The Nigerian government has taken a significant step towards strengthening its border security by integrating over 15 million migration records into its digital border management system. According to reports from Voice of Nigeria and THISDAYLIVE, this move is aimed at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of immigration controls.
The data integration process has been carried out by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), and an over-eight-petabyte data centre has been established to house the vast amount of information. This centre is expected to facilitate the swift processing of travellers and enhance the overall security of the nation’s borders.
Improved border control is crucial for Nigeria, as it seeks to combat illegal migration, human trafficking, and other transnational crimes. This initiative also aligns with the government’s digitalisation efforts, which aim to modernise various sectors of the economy and improve service delivery.
However, it’s important to note that the Nigerian government has not yet provided details on when the integration process began or the specific systems and technologies used. Additionally, the exact impact of this integration on border security remains uncertain.
