Four suspected members of a kidnapping gang have been sentenced to death by hanging by an Edo State High Court sitting in Benin City, following a landmark judgment that has put the state’s specialised criminal justice system under the national spotlight. According to Premium Times Nigeria, the convicts are Marvelous Isaac, 32; Wisdom Michael, 36; Rufus Emete Michael, 30, and Gift Raphael, 27.
The trial attracted wide attention, with Premium Times reporting that the court heard evidence against the defendants, including testimony from witnesses, before reaching its verdict. Tribune Online also reported on the story, noting that the convicts were found guilty of kidnapping and membership in a cult, according to court documents.
This is not the first time such a severe sentence has been handed down in Edo State. Last year, another four suspects were sentenced to death for their role in a series of violent crimes, including kidnapping and robbery, reports Premium Times.
