Why Nigeria Can’t Return to Egypt After Fuel Subsidy Removal – Bankole-Hameed

Shehu Bankole Hameed, the chairman and coordinator of Team Prosper, an organization comprising core professionals mobilizing support for President Bola Tinubu’s reelection, has shed light on why Nigeria cannot return to importing fuel from Egypt following the removal of the fuel subsidy. According to Tribune Online, Hameed emphasized that the strategic independence in petroleum resources is a crucial factor in ensuring national stability and economic growth.

‘Our reliance on Egyptian crude oil was a product of our own challenges in local refining capacity and an attempt to alleviate fuel scarcity. Now, with the subsidy removal, we have the opportunity to focus on revitalizing our refineries and fostering self-reliance. This move is not only economically prudent but also vital for our national security,’ Hameed stated.

Hameed’s sentiments echo those of President Tinubu, who has been vocal about the need to prioritize local refineries and reduce dependence on imported fuel.

This development is significant as it highlights the government’s commitment to energy independence and self-reliance. The implications could potentially have far-reaching effects on Nigeria’s economy and geopolitical standing.
