According to Vanguard News, Lagos Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat has initiated a campaign aimed at boosting youth voter turnout for the 2027 general elections. The move comes as concern grows over declining voter participation in previous elections.
Hamzat expressed his worry that although around 6.2 million Lagos residents were registered to vote during the last election, only about 1.2 million actually participated. He emphasized the importance of youths participating in the democratic process and pledged to work towards increasing their engagement.
This push for youth voter mobilization in Lagos is significant given the high proportion of young people residing in the state. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, over 60% of Lagos residents are under the age of 35. The increased participation of these young voters could potentially shift the political landscape in the upcoming elections.
