The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), a Nigerian government initiative, has empowered 620 indigenes of Ogoni in Rivers State with postgraduate scholarship grants and vocational training for persons living with disabilities, THISDAYLIVE reports. According to the publication, the move is aimed at addressing the educational and economic needs of the Ogoni people, who have been affected by oil spillages and pollution over the years. The project, which has been ongoing since 2016, is expected to continue its efforts in capacity building and livelihood improvement for the Ogoni community. The training covers various vocational skills such as welding, catering, and tailoring, among others. This development is significant as it marks a step towards rehabilitating and uplifting the standard of living for the Ogoni people, many of whom have been adversely affected by environmental degradation caused by oil exploitation activities. The initiative is part of the Nigerian government’s commitment to addressing the issues faced by the Ogoni community and ensuring a more sustainable future for the region.
