In a World Press Conference on Tuesday in Abuja, Prof. Joash Amupitan presented INEC’s preparations for the 2027 general elections. During his address, he revealed that INEC staff are the least paid workers in the country. According to Punch Newspapers, Amupitan disclosed this and said that the commission had taken steps to ensure they give their staff a living wage. The Vanguard News corroborated this report, adding that Amupitan felt it necessary to demand responsibility from INEC staff if they were to be paid fairly.
This revelation comes as many Nigerians grapple with economic hardships and low wages across various sectors. The National Minimum Wage Act currently sets the minimum wage for workers in Nigeria at N30,000 ($75) per month. It remains unclear whether INEC staff fall below this figure, and if so, by how much.
