Lagos Chamber of Commerce Urges Banks for Cheaper Loans Post CBN Rate Cut

According to a report by Vanguard News, the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has urged banks to translate the Central Bank of Nigeria’s reduction in the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) into cheaper and more accessible credit for businesses, particularly small and medium enterprises. In a statement, LCCI Director-General, Dr Chinyere Almona, called on banks to ensure that the recent 350-basis-point cut in the MPR translates to a reduction in interest rates, making it easier for businesses to access loans.

Almona stated that this move would stimulate economic growth and support the recovery of industries impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. She also emphasized the need for banks to prioritize lending to small and medium enterprises as they are the backbone of Nigeria’s economy.

However, it is unclear if any banks have responded to LCCI’s demand for cheaper loans post CBN rate cut. The Central Bank of Nigeria has not said when the facility began operating or if it will make a difference in loan interest rates for businesses.
