Governor Seyi Makinde and his deputy, Rauf Olaniyan, have made a significant gesture by donating N5 million to a church founded by the controversial Yoruba rights activist, Sunday Igboho. This generous donation, made during a recent visit to the church, highlights the importance the Oyo State leaders place on the role of religion in society.
According to a report by Tribune Online, the visit took place at the church located in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. During the visit, both Makinde and Olaniyan emphasized the importance of prayer, particularly in these trying times. They also urged Nigerians and residents of Oyo State to support the election of good leaders at all levels in the coming elections.
The church, which Igboho founded in 2019, is known for its emphasis on traditional Yoruba religious practices. Igboho, who gained national prominence for his activism against Fulani herders in the Southwest, has been a controversial figure, with some hailing him as a hero and others criticizing his methods.
The donation from Makinde and Olaniyan is significant, not only for its financial value but also for the symbolism it carries. By supporting Igboho’s church, the Oyo State leaders are acknowledging the role of traditional religion in Yoruba culture and society. This gesture could be seen as a strategic move aimed at appeasing Igboho’s supporters, many of whom are influential in the Yoruba community.
The move has sparked debate among Nigerians, with some praising the leaders for their show of support for traditional religion, while others criticize Igboho’s methods and question the wisdom of associating with him. However, it is clear that the donation is a significant development in the ongoing saga surrounding Igboho and his activism.
