Forty years after the assassination of renowned journalist Dele Giwa, the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has called on relevant authorities to revisit the unresolved case, insisting that the passage of time should not extinguish the quest for justice. Giwa, a former editor of the Newswatch magazine, was killed by a parcel bomb on October 19, 1986. According to Vanguard News, the NGE made the call in a statement issued on Tuesday, stating that the guild remains ‘deeply concerned’ about the lack of progress in the investigation and the absence of justice for Giwa’s family. The NGE’s call comes as other civil society organizations and politicians have also called for accountability in the Lekki Toll Gate shootings during the EndSARS protests in 2020. The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, and the Global Rights Civil Society Organization have both called for justice and accountability for victims of the Lekki Toll Gate shootings, insisting that Nigeria must never normalize injustice. The NGE’s demand for justice for Dele Giwa underscores the importance of holding those responsible for violent crimes against journalists accountable, and sending a clear message that such acts will not be tolerated.
