As Nigeria celebrates its 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1st, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has emphasized the need for inclusive development and poverty reduction. According to a report by The Nation Newspaper, the SDP made this call at a press conference held in Abuja last week.
The party’s National Chairman, Chief Olu Falae, stated that the current state of the nation requires urgent attention, with a focus on addressing inequality and reducing poverty levels.
Falae also urged the government to prioritize job creation and invest in critical sectors such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure. He emphasized that these investments would contribute significantly to poverty reduction and national development.
This call for inclusive development and poverty reduction comes at a time when Nigeria is grappling with various socio-economic challenges. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Nigeria’s unemployment rate stood at 33.3% as of Q2 2026, with over 23 million Nigerians unemployed.
The SDP’s advocacy aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1: No Poverty and SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. The party’s focus on inclusive development reflects a desire to ensure that all Nigerians benefit from economic growth, rather than just a select few.
It is essential for Nigerian leaders to prioritize poverty reduction and inclusive development as the country strives towards sustainable growth and development.
