In a statement released by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, Nigeria condemned the deaths and called for a thorough investigation into the unfortunate events. According to Punch Newspapers, the victims died in different parts of South Africa between September 18th and 21st, 2026. Punch Newspapers reported that the government has demanded a full account of what transpired and urged South African authorities to ensure the safety and protection of Nigerian citizens living in the country. Tribune Online also reported the story, adding that this is not the first time such incidents have occurred, and calls have been made for a more concerted effort to protect Nigerians abroad. The Nigerian High Commissioner to South Africa, Ambassador Godwin Adama, has already met with South African authorities over the matter.
