Nigeria is set to save an estimated $50 million through data localization, according to reports from Nigeria Communications Week. The initiative, driven by key stakeholders, aims to strengthen data security and boost the country’s digital economy.
According to Nigeria Communications Week, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) are collaborating on the establishment of a National Sovereign Cloud. This move is intended to bolster data security and support local data hosting.
However, a report from PM News Nigeria suggests that only 59% of Nigerian banks and fintechs are prepared for the January 2027 deadline for local data hosting, as set by the Central Bank of Nigeria. This could potentially impact the realization of the projected savings.
The push for data localization is part of a larger digital transformation effort in Nigeria. The Voice of Nigeria reported that NITDA and CBN have intensified their efforts in this regard, recognizing the strategic importance of data localization for the country’s digital economy.
This development underscores the growing importance of data security and localization in Nigeria’s digital landscape. As the country continues to embrace technology, these initiatives are expected to play a crucial role in shaping its digital future.
