Nigeria Won’t Return to Fuel Subsidy Regime, Tinubu Vows

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ruled out any return to Nigeria’s former fuel subsidy regime, insisting that the government will instead pursue measures aimed at reducing transport costs.

Tribune Online reported on Saturday, September 19, 2026, that Tinubu rejected calls by some opposition figures for a return to fuel subsidies. The president’s position keeps the government’s economic policy focused on alternatives to directly lowering petrol prices through subsidy payments.

In a related report, THISDAY said Tinubu had tasked state governments with helping deliver cheaper transport by October as part of the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme.

Daily Post also reported that the president promised lower transport costs from October 2026. A TVC News headline carried through Google News specified October 1 as the start date for lower fares.

The reports did not provide details of the exact fare reductions, the states covered or how quickly the compressed natural gas transport scheme will reach commuters. Those details will matter to Nigerians still dealing with high transport costs following the removal of the petrol subsidy.
