The Nigerian Press Council (NPC) and information experts have urged the media to maintain objectivity in their coverage as a new newspaper, Eagle Times, launched in Abuja last week.
Speaking at the launch event, the Director-General of the NPC, Mr. Martin Obono, emphasized the importance of ethical journalism in ensuring the credibility and integrity of the Nigerian media.
'The role of the press is crucial in shaping public opinion and holding those in power accountable,' he said.
He further stressed that objective reporting is essential to maintaining the trust of the readers.
Also speaking at the event, Dr. Joy Ijeoma, a media scholar, called on journalists to be responsible and fair in their reportage.
'The media has the power to influence public opinion, and it is our duty as journalists to use this power responsibly,' she said.
Eagle Times, which bills itself as a daily newspaper, is expected to provide news and information on local and national issues.
Its launch comes amidst concerns about the quality of journalism in Nigeria, with many criticizing the media for sensationalism and lack of objectivity.
