‘One by One, They Started Dying’: Detainees Speak of Deaths in Nigerian Custody

According to a report by Reuters, survivors of detention facilities in Nigeria have shared harrowing accounts of the deaths of fellow inmates. The unnamed sources recount tales of overcrowding, inadequate medical care, and poor sanitary conditions that allegedly led to numerous fatalities.

‘One after another, they started dying,’ one survivor told Reuters, describing the grim reality of life inside the detention facility. The Nigerian authorities have not commented on these claims or when the facility began operating.

The issue of human rights abuses in Nigerian custody has been a long-standing concern for local and international human rights organizations. With these latest allegations, attention is once again being drawn to the need for reform within the country’s justice system.

The exact number of deaths or the specific detention facility involved was not disclosed by Reuters due to safety concerns for the survivors who shared their stories.
