The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, of obfuscation over the recent 30-day petrol discount announced by his government. In a statement released on Saturday, the Lagos State chapter of the PDP called on the Federal Government to disclose details of the proposed discount, stating that such a move would provide clarity and prevent the appearance of favoritism.
According to reports, the 30-day discount on petrol prices is set to be implemented at NNPC retail stations. However, the PDP claims that the lack of transparency surrounding the initiative raises concerns about its fairness and impact on the Nigerian public.
The PDP’s criticism comes as a response to Tinubu’s recent announcement of the discount, which has been met with mixed reactions from various political quarters.
In a related development, the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has also expressed concern over the discount, calling for accountability to address the hardships faced by Nigerians. The Centre, in a statement by its Executive Chairman, Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, expressed doubts about the discount’s ability to significantly reduce fuel prices, stating that ‘the discount, if not well managed, may only lead to increased corruption and further exploitation of the masses.’
It is unclear when the discount will begin, with the NNPC yet to provide a definitive timeline for its implementation.
